Chair for Research on the History and Impact of the Holocaust

The Chair for the Study on the History and Impact of the Holocaust, the first of its kind dedicated to this subject in Germany, was established in 2017 at the History Seminar of Goethe University. The chair is closely connected to the directorship of the Fritz Bauer Institute.

The Professorship for the Study of the History and Impact of the Holocaustis is marking a new path in contemporary history research at Goethe University. Unlike other countries, Germany had not previously had such a Chair. At the heart of research and teaching are the systematic murder of European Jews during World War II, the broader crimes of the Nazi regime, and their far-reaching consequences that extend into the present day. Key areas of work include the history of violence and crimes under the Nazi regime and their sociopolitical contexts, the relevance of these events for our present, and the history of their impact—broadly, the societal engagement with the legacy of violence and dictatorship in 20th-century Germany and beyond.
