Vortrag in englischer Sprache!

This lecture will firstly explore why the »Kindertransport« came into existence: was it a particular and unusual response to the Jewish plight in 1938 or more part of a pattern of British immigration procedures since 1918? It then analyses patterns of memory concerning this movement and why we have come to remember and represent the »Kindertransport« so intensely, especially in relation to other migrant and refugee movements to Britain. It will analyse especially the notion of the »Kinder« »journey« and how it has been constructed to make it part of the classic refugee narrative. It will consider the stories that tend »not« to be remembered within »Kindertransport« journeys. Finally, it will suggest ways forward to make the history and memory of the »Kindertransport« more inclusive and self-reflexive.

Tony Kushner ist Professor für Geschichte und Direktor des Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations an der Universität von Southampton. Sein Forschungsinteresse richtet sich auf die moderne jüdische Geschichte Großbritanniens, die Geschichte der Migration sowie die Geschichte des Rassismus und des Antisemitismus. Er ist Autor von acht Monographien, u.a. Remembering Refugees: Then and Now (Manchester University Press, 2006) und Anglo-Jewry since 1066: Place, Locality and Memory (Manchester University Press, 2009) Sein jüngstes Buch The Battle of Britishness: Migrant Journeys since 1685 erschien 2012 ebenfalls bei Manchester University Press.
