Icons of Memory
Revisiting and Imagining the Jewish Past

Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Richard I. Cohen, Jerusalem:

Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main
Campus Westend
Norbert-Wollheim-Platz 1
Casino am IG Farben-Haus, Raum 1.801

Vortrag in englischer Sprache.

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries witnessed a certain engagement with the Jewish historical past by non-Jewish and Jewish artists. The lecture will explore the ways in which events and figures of the past were invoked by various artists (e. g. Moritz Oppenheim, Maurycy Gottlieb, Max Liebermann, Samuel Hirszenberg, E. M. Lilien, Marc Chagall, and Reuven Rubin) to unravel contemporary issues. Artists were seldom concerned with presenting history »as it was« but rather with the allusions the historical figures and experience could provoke with their own period and predicament. Biblical (e. g. Moses, David, Jesus, and Job) and historical figures (e.g. Spinoza, Moses Mendelssohn, Moses Montefiore, and Theodor Herzl) appeared in a wide range of artistic works that created imaginative interpretations of their historical role. Similarly scenes from the past, be they biblical or post-biblical, loomed as a modern discourse on the contemporary context.
