Kantorowicz-Lecture in Political Manguage 2012
Veranstalter: Forschungszentrum für Historische Geisteswissenschaften an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fritz Bauer Institut
From Origen and Ambrose, Luther and Shakespeare, Karl Marx and Joseph Goebbels: these and many other thinkers have characterized certain types of political regimes as »Jewish«. What cultural logics made the vocabulary of Judaizing such an enduring way of criticizing politics? This lecture will begin by exploring – through an early Christian, a medieval, and a modern example – how »Judaism« became a meaningful critique of political representation. It will conclude by asking what the durability of this critique can teach us about how we approach the history of ideas and of concepts.
David Nirenberg ist Professor für Mediaval History and Social Thought an der Universität von Chicago.
