Thursday, 27. May 2021 - 18:00 o'clock

Online film screening:

Directed by András Kovács, Hungary 1966, 96 min.

Set in 1946, this film (based on a novel by Tibor Cseres) is about the planning and execution of the January 1942 Novi Sad massacre of 4,000 Yugoslav Serbs and Jews by Hungarian army units in retaliation for a partisan ambush (in which 17 soldiers were gunned down). It is mainly explored through the recollections of four participants – Major Buky, Lieutenant Tarpataki, Ensign Pozdor, and Corporal Szabonow – who are cellmates awaiting trial. Ultimately, however, it is an extended debate on questions of individual responsibility.
